I have always had a hard time keeping a journal. There was a brief time when personal writing became easy and that was when I took a course for my graduate program on Teaching Writing to Children (Lucy Calkins). During this time I wrote a few times a day for about three months. Before and after that experience I have written about 1-2 times per month… maybe. (Not including the journals I have attempted to keep for my children).
My aunt told me that if she were going to describe me to someone who had never met me, she would say I am purposeful. Whenever I take on a project or task I have to have a purpose. It’s true. I will never sit down and crochet ten hats just because I want to. I will sit down and crochet ten hats when I know who I’m going to give them to, and that they will use and like them. I do better when I have a specific purpose in mind.
So I sat down to practice writing and it just started to flow. I had written several potential post rough drafts before I realized how easy it felt. I started to wonder… Have I found a functional, purposeful outlet for my writing? Is blogging the thing that will make a difference for me and enable me to write in a way that feels meaningful? Maybe it will and maybe it won’t, but I’m sure excited to find out!
How do you get your creative juices flowing? When do you find it easier/more difficult to write?
